Composting in Cowichan

The race to open the first large scale composting facility on the south island is close to finishing. Construction of the West Coast Diversion Corporation's (WCDC) Fisher Road composting facility is close to completion, with a projected start time of mid September, Denis Cuerrier of WCDC is pleased to announce. The operation has a capacity of 120 tonnes per day and can accept all organic materials. Cuerrier says it is because of WCDC that the Cowichan Valley Regional District can ban organic waste. He expects to charge $70/tonne at the door, less than the local tipping fees of $80/tonne at the Regional District, or the Brother's transfer station. He also hopes to partner with local haulers to bring in organic waste.
