Model "Superwood" Technology Coming to Victoria Area

Submitted by CWMA Executive Director Andy Telfer

A plant producing recycled plastic products is coming to Vancouver Island. In a presentation to the CWMA Board and staff, Richard Jablonski outlined the plans for Synto Products Victoria Ltd. to accept co-mingled rigid plastics which will create plastic wood and other items for outdoor applications.

Determined to differentiate his plant from other "superwood" concepts, Jablonski explained the patented "Julien technology" already supports 120 such operations worldwide, including four in the United States. He also stressed that the plant will not compete with any existing operations.

The plant needs a population base of about 300,000 people and will initially accept 1,500 tonnes and eventually 3,000 tonnes of plastics per year. All types of plastics will be accepted with up to a remarkable 20% contamination of non-plastic elements (labels, glue, metal lids) and no residual waste. When asked if there was to be a tipping fee for private haulers, Jablonski said that the intent is to receive materials at no charge at the door.

Jablonski is President of Industrial Recycling Systems Corporation, which holds the Canadian patent for the technology. His company receives funding from the Venture Capital Corporation and is looking for other investors. The projected start date for the new plastics recycling facility is November 1997.
