NRE's Bright Recycling IdeaA pilot project that saw some 1,000 fluorescent light tubes collected and recycled has been declared a success by Nanaimo Recycling Exchange President Sean Fedorowich. The City of Nanaimo covered the cost of the trial program for fluorescent lights collected from residential sources. Fluorescent lights are the largest source of mercury in our garbage. Tubes collected are sent to Nu-Life Industries. This Aldergrove company safely breaks down the fluorescent light tubes into component parts, recovers harmful mercury, and recycles the materials. Business pay 50 cents to dispose of a 4-foot fluorescent tube and $1 to dispose of an 8-foot tube. Funding for the residential part of the program ran out January 31 and the NRE is seeking sponsorship or will have to start charging a disposal fee. Source: CWMA News (January 1998) vol. 3 iss. 1.
