Recycling Computers

One estimate says some 40 million computers will be retired this year. What can be done with these old machines? Here are some of the options:

  • Encorp Pacific (Canada) manages a province-wide used electronics recycling program available to consumers and businesses in British Columbia. You can drop off any of the regulated products at the identified collection locations without charge, and be assured they will be recycled responsibly. (www.encorp.ca/electronics)
    .
  • Share the Technology (www.sharetechnology.org) has a list of organizations that accept donated computers.
    .
  • Give the computer to a friend or relative who may only use the machine for word processing or Email.
    .
  • IBM has a new program to help you recycle your old PC, whether it’s an IBM model or not. Those still functioning get refurbished and passed on to a charity. Those too far gone get disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. There is a cost. Check with your computer retailer for more info.
    .
  • Call the BC Waste Reduction and Pollution Prevention Hotline at
    1-800-667-4321.
